ESA Accepts Applications for 2012 Youth Scholarship Program
Children of police officers, fire fighters eligible for $10,000 in college scholarships

Irving, Texas (Dec. 14, 2011) — The Electronic Security Association (ESA) is accepting applications for its 2012 Youth Scholarship Program, which will award $10,000 in scholarships to two children of active duty police officers and firefighters. The first-place winner will receive $7,500 to put toward their college education and the second-place winner will receive $2,500.

Since the ESA Youth Scholarship Program was created in 1996, the association and its affiliated Chartered Chapters have donated more than $300,000 in scholarship funds to children of police officers and fire fighters.

"The men and women of our country who serve as police officers or fire fighters are heroes and national treasures,” said ESA President Dom D’Ascoli. "The work they do in protecting our communities can never be appreciated enough. This scholarship is one of the ways we can thank our deserving public safety partners.”

Awards are based on a combination of academic achievement, national test scores, extracurricular participation and an essay. Students are awarded up to 25 points for GPA, 30 points for ACT/SAT scores, 25 points for an essay and 20 points for extracurricular activities. Points are awarded through a combination of earned academic points and judging by committee members.

To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, students must be between 15 and 20 years old, a graduating high school senior, and have been accepted for admission to an accredited college or university. For the second consecutive year, homeschooled students will be eligible to compete. All applicants must provide a transcript with a calculated cumulative GPA through 11th grade to be eligible.

Each eligible student must have a father, mother or natural guardian who is an active duty, full-time police officer, fire fighter or volunteer fire fighter. Students will be required to write an essay titled, "What it means to me to have my parent or guardian involved in securing our community.”

Students residing in a state with a participating ESA Chartered Chapter must enter through their state-level scholarship program to be considered for the national awards. The winners from each state chapter are automatically considered for the national scholarship. Students who reside in a state without an ESA chapter or in a non-participating state will submit their applications directly to ESA.

The deadline for students in non-participating chapters to submit applications is March 30, 2012. Participating chapters may have earlier deadlines. Students must contact their state chapter for specific deadline information. For complete scholarship rules and a list of participating states, visit ESA’s Web site at www.ESAweb.org/scholarship.

New State Fire Alarm System Requirements – Is your Building’s System Tagged?

Are you up to date with the required testing of your fire alarm system within your facility? Believe it or not, in the State of Ohio, all fire alarm systems are required to be inspected and tagged by a Licensed Fire Alarm Technician.
The adoption of these two new requirements is important because it means that we will see the enforcement of required Fire Alarm System Test & Inspections begin statewide. Until now, few municipalities in our state put much emphasis on these inspection requirements. Now that an Inspection Tag is required, it will be much easier for fire code officials to enforce building owners to make sure their building fire alarm system is in proper operation. Now, when the fire safety officer enters a building to inspect for things like properly working emergency lighting, clutter free exits, un-padlocked fire doors and a tag on the fire extinguisher, he will also be able to check for a fire alarm system Inspection Tag. A glance at this tag will tell the inspector at once whether or not the building fire alarm system is under contract for regular test and inspections by a licensed fire alarm company. No building owner in the state will want to leave their system un-repaired for very long; a red “Out of Service” tag will be posted on their fire alarm control panel.
Fire alarm systems need this inspection for many reasons. They determine the deficiencies within the facility that need attention as well as routine maintenance required. By having the required testing completed it will lead to a longer lasting system, and minimal false alarms. Let’s face it; less false alarms result in more productivity of the facility.
Should an emergency arise in your facility, do you have the documentation to present to the Insurance companies? With the annual test and maintenance you are provided with the proper documentation.
This code by Ohio was adopted a couple of years ago and is as follows;
The first code adoption requires an Annual Inspection Tag be completed and attached to every fire alarm system (OFC 901.6.3) – both new and existing systems included. Although the inspection of these systems has always been required, the tag rule is new. This tag should be completed and placed at the FACP or other "approved location" when the fire licensed technician performs the site’s annual, semi-annual or quarterly inspection. Secondly, our Ohio Fire Code now requires an Out of Service Tag be placed on any required fire alarm system or portion thereof that is non-operational (OFC 901.7.2).

For further information on this specific code requirement, or to schedule a test & inspect, please contact me at 330-723-9795 ext. 124.
